10 Indoor Activities to Entertain Kids

A rainy day can quickly turn into a very long day when you continually hear the phrase “Mom, I’m bored – there is nothing to do”.  Getting the kids engaged in simple, fun activities turns a boring day turn into a memorable day.  Try some, or all, of these solutions:

#1  Have a dance party – pick age appropriate music kids can dance to.  Don’t forget favorites like the Electric Slide, Cotton Eye Joe and the Macarena

#2  Create an indoor scavenger hunt

#3  Find an indoor pool or water park in your area – pack a picnic basket and make a whole day of it!  The kids are sure to sleep good after a day of swimming!

#4  Make a necklace with yarn, beads, pasta or Fruit Loops.  This is a great option for a wide variety of ages – the older kids can help the younger kids thread their ‘beads’ onto the yarn.

#5  Write a Book – Kids that are old enough can write their own story and do the illustrations.  Younger kids can either dictate their story to mom or dad to write down and then draw their own pictures OR you can give them a coloring page to start them off – they can color the picture(s) and tell you a story based on the pictures.  One of my favorite places to find printable coloring pages is http://www.educationalcoloringpages.com/freecoloring.html

#6  Watch old family videos – tell the kids’ stories about what you remember about the events you are watching.  Kids love to see themselves as babies, and love to hear about the cute things they did, and the funny way they used to say things as they learned to talk.  It’s a great way for you to stroll down memory lane as well….

#7  Build a fort out of blankets (use chairs, couches, yarn- anything to hold up the blankets!) Add a string of rope light or Xmas lights, blankets and pillows and they can stay in there all day (and night).  How fun would it be if you turned an afternoon activity into a true campout (without the bugs) if mom and dad slept in the tent with the kids.

#8  Make your own commercials.  Have each person pick a common household item and video them while they make their best sales pitch to sell the item to you. Or tape them while you interview them about the product – ask them silly questions and see if they can come up with answers to support why everyone should buy this product.

#9  Play hopscotch!  Use painters tape to draw the lines on your kitchen floor (or any floor without carpeting) and hop away!

#10  Finger paint with pudding – I suggest you lay down a flannel backed outdoor tablecloth on the floor and put the paper on that for them to create their masterpiece.  Or, shaving cream on the counter works too (as long as you don’t have a white counter top that is).  My son’s teacher used to have the kids do math problems by covering the desk with shaving cream and they use their fingers to ‘write’ their math problems – they loved it!
